Vespa has since moved on to Arena, via Club 145 (145 Flinders Lane, the old Ivy). It has been replaced with Amore, billed as Melbourne's first official Italian/Latin night. The following review is of Vespa when it was at Silvers (5.12.01)...
January 27, 2001
VESPA is the place to be on a Saturday night. People who go to Vespa are in there for pure FUN! The crowd is fantastic and the staff are so friendly.

The crowd is amazing. By 10.00, the upstairs room is pumping with R'n'B played by The Anferny Twins. The music continues until 4am, but people still want more! The age of the crowd is from 19-25, which doesn't really matter that much because everybody loves to dance!

The dowstairs room opened at about 11.00 with DJ Tony P as he started mixing his retro, dance and Italian tunes. By this times, the club is full, but there's room for those who like to stand around the bar and have a few drinks with their friends and those who just want to party all night.

Tony P took all requests and announcements from people which fired up the crowd even more. I scored an Italian CD which was great and my friend said she won a WESTLIFE CD a few weeks back. I think there are CD giveaways most weeks. To make it more exciting, they have competitions in order to win the CD's and the crowd really gets into it.

The club finished at 4am which is a reasonable time. Even though it was hard to leave, because people were asking Tony for more, it's good to look forward to something the following Saturday! The girl on the lights was really good and used her skills according to what music was playing.

I paid $7 to get in because I was on a guestlist, but I think it's normally $11. Passes were given out as we left to inform us of what was on the next week. The guestlist isn't hard to get on because the promoters are in the club and at the front door and are really approachable and friendly!

I recommend Vespa on Saturday nights as I have tried other clubs in the past and haven't really had much fun. Oops, I forgot, as you walk in, there's a cool room on the side for chillin' out. The DJ's in there play house music and it's really relaxing.

I think a club with three rooms and about six varieties of music is pretty cool, don't you? I'm very impressed!

Vespa is Silvers' answer to an "Italian Discotecca". However, don't be fooled into believing that this night plays only Italian Music. The truth is quite the contrary.

Silvers is deceptively located amongst a shopping strip on Toorak Road in South Yarra (thus making parking very easy, and amazingly free). However, it still manages to draw a core group of loyal followers who are primarily between the ages of 18 and 22. Silvers operates three rooms. Upstairs, DJs the Anferny Twinz and Funky K plays R&B and Progressive House. The Side Room has DJ Anthony Luppino playing funky, vocal and Latino house. However, the main attraction can be found downstairs. Here Paul B and Tony P play the latest commercial dance, retro and Italian tracks. On special occasions, DJ Mark Pellegrini can be found in the DJ booth.

I did not spend very much time upstairs, as downstairs is where the majority of people can be found. Downstairs is rectangle in shape, with two bars on either side of the dance-floor. Surprisingly, the dance-floor is very large in comparison to that of other clubs. Thus meaning that there is plenty of room for all to dance on. I didn't mind the fact that current commercial dance was mixed in with the occasional 80's and Italian track, but I seemed to be the only one to be annoyed when the weekly Bon Jovi dedication came on. However given the crowd response, you feel compelled to "get with it". Given the very young crowd, dress sense is of extreme importance. Thus cargo's and three-quarter pants are no where to be seen.

I arrived just after 11 to be surprised that there was a very little line of a few people, but the club was fairly full. Upon entering, the atmosphere was very vibrant and alive. Vespa is perceived to be a club only for those with an Italian culture. This is not so! Although the occasional Italian music is played, it is played to a current dancing beat, thus not restricting the crowd to a certain race or culture. One could say that bar the occasional Italian tracks, the crowd is similar to that of a Chasers or Heat.

What shocked me the most was the easy nature of the crowd. You won't see those that are only looking for trouble, nor would you see anything that would disturb you or force you to walk away reluctant to return. That's why Saturday nights always lead me to Vespa.

Entry is $11, but cheaper if you present the pass they give out when you left from the week before.

Silvers is located at 445 Toorak Road, Toorak. Entry is via a corridor at the back of the shopping strip, though there is ample signs that's will direct the first timer. The trick is to park behind the shopping strip closest to the supermarket. From there, it's a simple walk through the corridors to the club entrance.
