I ventured into Velour on yet another Young Liberal function. Their Friday evenings start off as an afterwork gathering for all of the suits, but later in the night, it tranforms into a pulsing club. Because the night starts with suits, it remains fairly dressy throughout the night.

We arrived at about 8.30, just as things were picking-up. At that stage there were plenty of young office people settling in, and the DJ was warming up with some fairly popular commercial tunes from the ‘90s. After a few games of pool, the venue was quite busy, and the music started getting heavier (and extremely loud), as it moved towards house. Later in the night, it remained a mix of ‘90s commercial and house.

Throughout the night, the crowd age range dropped a little. Early in the night it was mainly 24-28, but by the end it was more 20-26. It was busy throughout, but never uncomfortably busy. This all results in a relaxed feeling venue.

Velour is one long skinny room, without a cover charge. You enter the room with a lounge area on the right, and dancefloor on the left. A little further down on the right is the accessible DJ and a long, and very classy looking bar. Opposite that are some steps to the downstairs toilets. At the far end of the room is a pool table. The whole venue is loungy, but with a classy feel.

Velour is a good place to drop in on a Friday night, if you are into thumping house tunes. It has a good feeling to it, and a slightly more mature and dressy crowd than most places.
