they have good DJs that play good music, it has a good vibe about the place, with a indoor and outdoor place to go.

It has a big capacity, and a friendly pub vibe due to the open area and bar
outside, but you can still dance like a loony all night!

Hi,
Not sure when you guys last went to Motel, but don't quite think your review
gives an accurate description. Ok, maybe the pretentious people bit is correct,
but the main section now is upstairs. Large dance floor and two bars and it
opens up to a large open roof top which overlooks the city skyline. Downstairs
also opens, but not to later in the evening when it's busy. The age group is
also more between 19-24. This is all on a friday night. Not sure bout the other
nights.

i don't think motel is open on fridays anymore..? went there last week and was
closed.

Motel has an excellent reputation for class. It came highly recommended to me by a stack of people, including a couple of friends who are dealers at Crown, who dragged me along. I am not sure whether they were keen to hang-out with the Crown staff, check-out the numerous AFL players, or just have a good time.
They were almost right about class. Motel Fridays sees a slightly older crowd than many of the other venues on this site. Most of the crowd would be 22-27; a fairly unusual age group in Melbourne clubs. Perhaps it is not so much classy as trendy, but looking good. A few suits here and there, but more clubwear than anything else. However, the crowded nature of the place, highlights an arrogance in the crowd. I became very sick of people pushing through the crowd without so much as an excuse me. There were a few pretentious people, however, there were more than enough genuine types too.
We arrived at about 10.30. At that time the front bar was open and packed. They open it up room by room. At about 11.15, the dancefloor opened. By about 1, the whole ground floor was all open, and the crowd peaked. It was still all busy at 2.30 when we left.
The venue is two levels, hidden away in South Melbourne. The ground level opens stage by stage, separated by venetian blinds. The front bar is the first part open. It is very sixties/seventies in style, and feels a bit like a diner, with a long bar. Before too long, the dancefloor opens, at the right end of the bar. This has an extension of the bar, a DJ booth, with a red backlit wall, a dancefloor, and a curtain at the back. This room is particularly dark, and there is no dancefloor lighting, aside from that wall. The music, provided by DJ Big Dave, is a great mix of nothing but mid-nineties and beyond, mainly commercial dance and house, and is heard throughout the venue.
The curtain at the back opens later to reveal a lounge type area. A few tables and space to stand or sit. Another set of blinds at the back, opens into what looks like a cozy lounge room in a mansion. It has a bar in the corner, tons of seating, a fireplace next to the rock feature wall, and a wooden floor area, that could double as second dancefloor. The music is piped throughout.
Upstairs was a cloakroom, but it is clearly a second dance-room on busy nights.
I enjoyed Motel for the music and some of the people. It was great to go to a venue that had some respectable people my own age, and good music. Okay, some people will go there for the footballers and other celebrities, and there were a few people who needed manners, and lessons in humility, but overall it was good. Go to Motel on a Friday when you want a cruisy night, with people aged 23-27.
