Chevy no more!

I've been terribly forgetful about this one. Chevron celebrates its last ever weekend this weekend. It is to be redeveloped as housing apartments.

The poster ads are up everywhere for the final bash this Saturday evening. So many memories, especially of the $1 drinks on Thursdays. We has some great times there. Thanks Chevy! - Ben, October 25th, 2001

Z.O.S. opens in style

The Z.O.S. opening was very cool, and simply massive. The venue looks great, and the true Chapel St set loved it.
Whilst the layout is the same as the old Chasers, the whole place has been enhanced, and feels fantastic, and a little it mysterious. Great urban beats, in an environment that feels jungle-like and spiritual. It all works.
The crowd was serious club people. A few freaks and so on, but plenty of style and sophistication as well. Not your 18-21 crowd, but more of a place for people a few years out of school. Also a step away from the average Chasers crowd. Max Moose was there for the Saturday, so please take a look at the pics. - Ben, September 30th, 2001

Z.O.S. lands soon

A very impressive invitation arrived today for the opening of Z.O.S. (Zone of Separation) on September 29th. It is to be located where Chasers used to be (Chasers closes story). Its tagline says "Technology, Culture, Emotion", and the venue is clearly going to be about dancing. Stay tuned for more details. - Ben, September 20th, 2001

East 93 starts with a bang

East 93 (ex-Jooce) opened their doors with a huge weekend, starting last Thursday. Thousands appeared on the first weekend for a look, including 3,000 on the Saturday night. They were fairly happy with the response. Max Moose was there for the Thursday, so please take a look at the pics. - Ben, September 18th, 2001

East 93 opens soon

It has been a while since asbestos forced the legendary Jooce to close its doors, but at long last, it springs back to life this Thursday (13/9) as East 93. Details are a little sketchy right now, but we can't wait to see what the new place is like. - Ben, September 8th, 2001

Bourbon Street opening huge

Bourbon Street's opening was enormous. The club really impressed, with a friend of mine describing it as the best looking club he had ever seen. It is a real street carnival atmosphere. You walk into the club, onto a cobblestone road. To the immediate right are some stairs up, and a sensational bar. At the far end, is a stage, where Voodoo Surf Gods were at their best. To the left are some steps up, and a restaurant area. People dance everywhere on the ground level.
Upstairs is the balcony, just like Boubon St, New Orleans. It goes around the whole club. From the entry end, you have a pool table and video games to the immediate right, a funky, almost African styled bar on the right, similar to the Jaffa Bar in Caseys/Cheers. On the left side is a very cool red bar, complete with a cozy make-out room.
Throughout the club, you hear the music from the street area, which is very current top 40, commercial dance, R&B, light house, and the odd classic. It is a great mix and the sound system is fantastic, not too loud. It is also one of the brighter clubs in Melbourne, which is a very, very good thing.
Definitely one to go and take a look at. I can't wait for the Fountain Gate one to open later in the year. - Ben, June 8th, 2001

Bourbon Street opens Thursday June 7

Bourbon Street on L1, Highpoint opens Thursday June 7th. I actually dropped by late last week for a look. It is very different to anything in Melbourne right now. They are recreating the legendary Bourbon St New Orleans, indoors. It looks pretty authentic actually, but nothing like any other club in Melbourne. They reckon it holds 1,500, and it has four or five rooms. Some of the bars will look spectacular by night.
If you are interested in attending the opening, a free pass is available. - Ben, June 1st, 2001

21C renovations open April 28

After 16 years, nightclub icon 21C, the club with the revolving dancefloor, has been renovated. The upgrade will be on show for all Saturday April 28th. The revolving danceflor remains, but the surrounds have been fully revamped, with major changes to the Sub Club, and the Vodka Lounge, which will become the Voyeur Room. Head to Frankston for a look. - Ben, April 16th, 2001
The renovations are absolutely awesome. It is a new club. Check our review for the lowdown.

Blimp 69 & Supernova to merge

I've known about this one for a little while, but I forgot to tell everyone. Half of Blimp 69 and half of Supernova are going to break away, join together and form a new band, with a bit more focus on originals, but still some covers. Sad news, given that Blimp and Nova are two of Melbourne's best coverbands. Blimp 69's final gig will be Easter Sunday @ Wild Bills, not sure about Supernova, but they will be at Metro on Saturday making an official announcement. - Ben, April 5th, 2001

Blimp 69 are still in the 21st on a friday for the next couple of weeks and LOAD the Blimp/Supernova hybrid start tonight at the metro. Worth checking out. - Dan (28/4/01)

Bobby's big Easter

Due to the success of Boardshorts and Bikinis at Bobby McGee's, we're going to do it all over again during Easter and this is what we have planned:
Saturday, April 14 - "PARTY"
Sunday, April 15 - Sunday Bunny Sunday - Boardshorts and Bikini 3 Dance Party
Monday, April 16 - HIP NIGHT Pyjama Party (This is probably the biggest Monday of the year)
This will be one of the best weekends to remember. So get into your boardies and your bikinis and bring along your PJs too because we have a big "PARTY" planned. - Tarn, March 26th, 2001

Chasers closing down

I received a phone call from Chasers, just letting me know that the venue had been sold (to an anonymous person who is into IT). They are having a party to end all parties (primarily for former staff) called "Last Dance" on Saturday 28 April 2001 to celebrate Chasers 16 years of glory. Anybody with a Chasers story to tell, please drop a line to David Stretch or Peter Raff. - Ben, March 20th, 2001

Arizona comes to Narre

Rosie's/Fenix has been taken over by Arizona. New owners have come in and renovated the place for a March 23 launch. The Narre Warren location will be in a Western theme. They will be trying to recapture the halcyon days when Rosie's was the most profitable venue in Melbourne per square metre. However, it will be an up-hill battle, with two new clubs opening in the area soon. The worst kept secret in town is that Wild Bills will be opening a massive new venue at Fountain Gate, and there is a whisper that the works on the Settlement at Cranbourne are almost complete. - Ben, March 7th, 2001

Bobby's Monday coming to a Saturday near you

If you love Bobby McGee's Monday (my favourite night), I have some great news for you. It is coming to Saturday! Feb 3 sees the launch of "PARTY", Bobby's new Saturday night. It is based along the lines of their Monday with $3 entry, $3 basic spirits, and $3 house beers. They are targeting the 18-26 year age group. Get behind it, we need a great Saturday night. - Ben, January 23rd, 2001

Rosies / Fenix closes forever

This was a sad event for me, as one of the crew who actually made a nightclub in Narre Warren rock. Last night was the last ever night of Rosie's / Fenix, and was appropriately deemed the "End of Rosie's Party". Fenix was an attempt to recapture the spirit of Rosie's but it never worked. At one stage, when I was heading the promotions team, Rosie's was the most profitable nightclub in Melbourne per square metre. Sadly the club lost direction, about the time I left, and it never recovered. However, life goes on, and rumour has it that Narre Warren is about to see a massive new club (different location). Stay tuned. - Ben, January 21st, 2001

Jooce closed for repairs

Okay, so we were a lot too slow on this one. Jooce in Ringwood has apparently been closed for the past two months for some major repairs. Rumour has it that asbestos was found and had to be removed. Not sure about that, but we will try to keep you posted. - Ben, January 20th, 2001

Update: Jooce is to reopen as East 93 soon

Red Ant and the Imperial on Chapel open for business

The Tooheys takeover is starting to have an impact. A few clubs renovations are now complete, and they are open for business. Red Ant on Russell St Melbourne, and the Imperial on Chapel St are part of that. They are both open fronted, cafe style from the street, with dancefloors out back. They are both in the style of the Station Hotel in Prahran, and they look and feel awesome. Very relaxed and cruisy - a little more mature and stylish. I think they will do well. - Ben, January 12th, 2001

Bullwinkles makes way for Shed 7

After a minor dispute with Warner Bros, the Hallam Hotel has finally renamed Bullwinkles, SHED 7. The name was chosen because of the link to Jack Daniels (original brewing shed), and because the name sounds kind of like a rave shed at the docks. It opens this weekend. - Ben, June 26th, 2000

Spy Lounge, Classy Saturdays?

Melbourne Spy Lounge is having some sort of launch this Saturday evening. Though the venue has been around for a month or two, they are spending some bucks to promote a new Saturday night, with an exclusive image. It comes from the creators of Tatou. They went overseas to check out the scene to see what works elsewhere. They rightly concluded that Melbourne needs a sophisticated club. Unfortunately, they purchased 22 King St. However, the venue has the right ideas. It used to be the Underground Club. It has been revived, with some classy features, such as a "Supper Club" type level, where you can kick back in a classy bar environment, without the thumping bass. Rumour has it that it is a no-denim venue, where you must dress to impress. It officially opens this Saturday, June 17th. - Ben, June 11th, 2000
